Clash of the Beaumont's for Mary's Meals
Mark Beaumont – 'The Man Who Cycled the World' – has today given his support to the Great Big Racketball Challenge for Mary's Meals in an event at Bell's Sports Centre, Perth. To raise awareness of the Challenge, Beaumont took on Scottish Squash and Racketball's coach, also Mark Beaumont, to determine which Beaumont would reign supreme on the Racketball court. The 'Mark's Match' is aimed at motivating everyone to create their own Racketball charity challenges to raise as much money as they can, through sponsorship, for Mary's Meals - one of Scotland's leading charities that currently feeds over 500,000 children in over 16 countries every day. Today's event has been organised by Scottish Squash and Racketball Ltd (SSRL) as part of their push to encourage people to raise money for Mary's Meals. Ron Pearman, SSRL Chairman explained: "Racketball is the UK's fastest growing racquet sport. It's played on a traditional squash court using a large racquet, similar to a tennis racquet, and a large rubber ball approximately twice the size of a squash ball. It is a great sport which is suitable for everyone whether or not you have played before. It's easy to take up and it is a great way to get fit". Pearman continued: "As an incentive for schools, private clubs, public facilities and offices, the four most creative Mary's Meals sponsorship schemes will win £400 worth of DUNLOP sporting equipment graciously donated by our sponsor. That is four sets of equipment – one for each category". Mark Beaumont, cyclist, documentary maker and bestselling author, added before the match: "Encouraging people raise money for Mary's Meals whilst playing Racketball is fantastic." "The Great Big Racketball Challenge for Mary's Meals 2011 is something that everyone can get involved with, whether or not they are new to racquet sports or have been playing for years. By raising as much money as we can we will be helping feed the thousands of children all over the world Mary's Meals supports on a daily basis. "I'm hoping that today's 'Clash of the Beaumont's' will encourage others to take up the Challenge and have a go at this fun new sport. Who knows, if the match goes well you may see me competing in 2014 Commonwealth Games!" Those wishing to compete for the sports equipment prizes should send a one page summary of their scheme to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
