Free Badminton lesssons for kids in Barrhead

KIDS in Barrhead will be able to make a racket with FREE badminton and squash lessons paid for by cash seized from criminals.

The CashBack for Communities project has teamed-up with East Renfrewshire Council, BADMINTONscotland and Scottish Squash and Racketball Ltd to offer youngsters free coaching, starting from tonight.

Mobile courts will be set up to allow children to take part in the weekly Friday Night project at Barrhead Sports Centre.

Councillor Mary Montague, convener for community services in East Renfrewshire, said: "We are delighted to be able to add to our extensive provision of sport and physical activity with free badminton and squash lessons at Barrhead Sports Centre.

"Such opportunities allow our young people to have fun, participate and learn new skills and develop self confidence in sport and in life."

Maggie Lawrie, Scottish Squash and Racketball Ltd's Racketball Manager, added: "We are delighted to be starting CashBack-funded Racketball session in Barrhead, and especially happy to be teaming up to offer local youths a truly multi-sport session.

"Racketball is the UK's fastest growing racket sport and we can't wait to get young people in Barrhead bashing a ball off a wall."

Kirsty Wilmington, Back Co-ordinator with BADMINTONscotland, also said: "These lessons are especially good coming into winter. If you're looking for something to do, come along and get involved. "

The classes – which every Friday from 6pm until 9pm – are open to all young people aged between 10 and 19, with both equipment and coaching provided.
